Who wants to clean their
oven? Definitely not me! When something spills to the bottom of my
oven it makes it impossible to use without major smoke filling the air--- afterwards
I always know that it's time for a good cleaning (a much dreaded task)! Luckily I have discovered the most natural and most effective
cleaner thanks to the book, The NaturallyClean Home. Their oven cleaning
recipe works super well and is completely safe! Best of all, I typically can cut this recipe
in half and with a little elbow grease, get the job done very quickly.
Steer clear of conventional
oven cleaning sprays! They are extremely
toxic and loaded with poisonous and dangerous chemicals! Try to avoid them at all costs (especially if
you have children at home).
This recipe is easy on the
lungs and the pocket book! Give your
oven some lovin’ with this quick-to-make recipe:
Serious Oven-Cleaning Formula
½ cup salt
¼ cup washing soda or borax
1 box (16 ounces) baking soda
scant ¼ cup water
¾ cup white vinegar
10 drops thyme essential oil
10 drops lemon or lemongrass
essential oil
1.)
Combine salt, washing soda and baking soda in
a plastic container or glass bowl. Add
just enough water to make a paste.
2.)
Remove oven racks
and preheat oven to 250°F for 15 minutes, then turn off oven and leave the door
open. Carefully spread the paste on oven
walls with a sponge or cloth and allow to set for 20 to 30 minutes.
3.)
Combine the
vinegar and essential oils in a spray bottle and shake well. Spray the oven walls and wipe clean. Rinse well.
Note: If you have a lot of baked-on grease or food
splatters, you may want to use fine steel wool to scrub those areas. Use a bit more salt if necessary.

It always pleasanty surprises me at how simple seemingly impossible things can be made! I have no shame in admitting I'm awful at cleaning ovens, and although I use bicarb, vinegar, lemons, etc throughout my home, I just never fancied doing the cooker myself! I have a house for my family and a small flat in birmingham that I rent to two students and I don't know which gets worse, ours or theirs! In the past I've used oven cleaner kent and oven cleaner birmingham and I've always loved seeing the clean cooker, but with posts like this it gives me the confidence to go ahead and have a go myself... wish me luck! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the advice. I've recently started trying a few green/natural/checmical free techniques, it's been kind of eye opening to see what you can achieve without toxic chemicals! My husband and I spend quite a lot of time away from home at work, but with a few teenage kid yet to leave home the place can get a bit messy, it has to be said! Particularly the cooker... they don't seem to enjoy cleaning that themselves :P Both our home and holiday home are fairly modest in size so we can manage most of it ourselves even with our busy schedules, though we have in the past used professional companies to come in and do the cookers. The two we use are oven cleaner sutton coldfield and oven cleaner medway, and it's nice to know that as well as doing a fantastic job, they don't use harsh chemicals either. But whether you go for that route or the D.I.Y. route, you can always get a decent job done without nasty chemicals! Thanks again for the informative post :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the information. Our cooker recently died a sorry death (right before Christmas, I know! *weep*). We were kindly given an old second hand one from a friend of a friend - it has apparently been in the garage a while but seems to work fine. However, it's filthy! With my own cookers in the past I've used oven cleaning solihull and oven cleaning sheffield, but they do such a good job it seems a shame to waste money on an oven I'm only going to use until new year in the sales, so this blog has been very helpful indeed thanks... I don't want my turkey tasting of nasty chemicals! ;) Thanks again, have a great Christmas :) x
ReplyDeleteJust a quick comment to say thanks a lot for your post and also ask (including other commenters) if they have ever had to clean a cooker when moving in to a new house and has that made a difference to how they've cleaned it? I don't know what it is but I just can't bring myself to cleaning someone else's grease and grime, especially in the oven! I don't know if I'm weird but it really makes me cringe haha. I usually get my OH to do it, but I have been known to get the professionals in too I won't lie! When we last lived in the area I got oven cleaning sutton coldfield to come and do it. Anyone else?
